CEAT-ASMP has performed evaluations on two different FOD detection systems at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, Illinois. These two technologies take different approaches to detecting FOD on airport surfaces. The iFerret™ FOD detection system by is a vision-based system by Stratech Systems Ltd. Tower-mounted sensors use visual processing to inspect critical airfield surfaces and detect FOD. Multiple sensors are installed on the airfield to provide complete coverage of critical surfaces. The FODFinder™ by Trex Enterprises is a mobile radar-based, vehicle mounted system. The system processes radar data and displays detections within the vehicle as it drives over airfield surfaces.
Testing for each system evaluation has been performed over a year and testing has been conducted repeatedly in different months and weather conditions. Multiple tests were performed on each system to assess detection capability and provided data quality assurance. Tests consisted of repeated targets being placed at fixed locations for calibration and performance exercises and targets being dispersed at random for operational assessments. Targets are selected from an extensive collection of commonly found FOD and actual FOD found at airports.
