CEAT-ASM - FOD detection system - Boston Logan International Airport

Boston Logan International Airport

CEAT-ASM has conducted an evaluation on a FOD detection system installed at Boston Logan International Airport. Preliminary testing was performed in June 2007, with the full assessment beginning June 2008, after installation of 10 sensors, and ending March 2009. The FODDetect® system is a runway light mounted dual visual-radar detection system produced by Xsight systems. The visual sensor surveys the adjacent runway for FOD at close range and surface level. In conjunction with the visual sensor a radar sensor scans the same area for FOD. Multiple sensors are installed alongside critical areas to create large areas of surveillance and provide coverage overlap. Data is processed within the sensor and detections are sent to a designated work station.
Multiple tests are implemented for the evaluation of the system. Each test is used to assess detection capability and provide data quality assurance. Tests consist of repeated targets being placed at fixed locations for calibration and performance exercises and targets being dispersed at random for operational assessments. Targets are selected from an extensive collection of commonly found FOD and actual FOD found at airports.
